Welcome to SLM in AACPS!!

The "SL" in SLM

Service-learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to real world issues; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning.

While the majority of students in AACPS earn their required Service Learning hours, our county does not believe in bare minimums!  We therefore challenge all students to engage in what we call "Service Beyond Limits" -- a gamified initiative that allows students to earn more hours (and other awards and incentives) by engaging in more service projects beyond those conducted in classes. The "M" in SLM

Mentorships in AACPS are initiatives (programs, clubs, small groupings, or pairings) that provide students with the opportunity to be positively influenced by adult or peer mentors in order to support their growth and development. These mentorships can have an academic, extra-curricular, cultural, or special interest focus  -- or a combination of any of these, as the aim of SLM is not only to support academic success, but also to help develop extraordinary citizens. Service Opportunity of the Month:

"Project Green: 9/11 Day of Service"

Dr. Murray Korman, Physics Professor at the United States Naval Academy, is offering a dynamic mentorship for students interested in research, the arts, theater, humanities, science, service, and more!  If interested, act fast because the deadline (October 16, 2016 for priority consideration; October 23, 2016 for extended consideration) is fast approaching!!  Click here to access the announcement and short application.

Do you know any Senior Citizens who would enjoy working to support young children in a school setting? If so, AACPS would love for them to join in the all new Senior-Senior Corps!  The initiative promises to pair Senior Citizens -- and senior students -- with young learners to help support literacy and structured play in Kindergaten to second grade.  Click here to learn how to get involved!

On Saturday, September 12th, The Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center invites AA County students and residents to participate in environmental service projects -- a small way to better our world in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001. Click here to learn more or sign up!

  • exposing students to diverse cultural and scholarly experiences.
  • prioritizing student voice, choice, and ownership within service experiences.

Service Quote of the Month

Service-learning is a particularly fertile way of involving young people in community service because it ties helping others to what they are learning in the classroom. In the process, it provides a compelling answer to the perennial question: ‘Why do I need to learn this stuff?’”
