ALPs AP Continuum

To prepare all students for success after high school, AACPS and the Advanced Studies and Programs Office strive to offer all students access to rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) courses to give students access to challenging college-level coursework. Before students can achieve greatness in high school and beyond, they must first develop the skills and learning strategies necessary to meet the demands of these rigorous courses. This process begins in elementary school through the Advanced Learner Program (ALPs) , designed to provide students with daily opportunities for advanced mathematics and language arts instruction.

This continuum from ALPs to AP/College Readiness creates a journey along which students develop and become comfortable with the creative and critical thinking skills necessary for a complete education. Through the ALPs-AP/College Readiness Continuum students will practice (among others):

  • Higher Order Questioning
  • Socratic Seminar Discussions
  • Collaborative Reasoning
  • Using multiple strategies to solve a problem
  • Integrating classroom strategies into Co-Curricular opportunities

Throughout this journey students take an active role in their own learning and develop a strong foundation on which they can build a successful--and rigorous--education.
